Boulder Family Photographer Perfect Newborn Skin in Photoshop

I was just editing a photo of beautiful baby Tula, and thought I’d share the before and after.
While I strive never to over-photoshop an image, I do want the parents to be able to look back at my photos in 30 years and see their baby exactly the way they remember him or her in their own minds…as perfect.
To achieve this, I spent about 20 minutes on this image. In Lightroom, I adjusted the brightness, because it was a little underexposed. I then added contrast and vibrance, and a slight vignette. I also warmed up the white balance.
Then I brought it into Photoshop. I duplicated the background layer, and put a gaussian blur onto it. Then I created a layer mask, hiding the blurred layer entirely. I then brushed the layer mask with white, revealing the places where babies skin needed to be smoothed.

Baby acne bye-bye!

In addition to the time I spend on a shoot, this is what the client is ultimately paying for…a beautiful finished product. This is why my shoots may cost more than some other photographers in the Boulder area. I also charge less than the most experienced photographers, because I know I still have lots of learning and growing to do. I think that my shoots are appropriately priced, and I hope that you do too.
