My clients are always asking what they should wear for their shoot. Here are some of my favorite do’s for shoots (you can find information on head shot or branding session attire here):

Generally, I recommend outfits that are within the same “color family,” but not too matchy-matchy. For instance, you could go with earth tones, pastels, brights, warm colors, cool colors or neutrals.

Don’t be afraid to mix patterns, as long as they are within the same color story. Don’t go overboard though.

It helps to have an inspiration piece to pull colors from. For instance, a top or scarf can incorporate 2 or 3 accent colors. That piece might tie everyone else’s outfits together. Hats make a huge impact as well.

Shoes might show, so pay attention to them! We may have to walk on dirt trails, so you can always wear comfortable shoes and pack your nicer shoes in a bag to put on at our first stop.

Recently, my female branding clients have been using Rent the Runway, which is a fabulous idea! You can "borrow" between 4 and 16 outfits at a time. Nuuly is also a fun rental option, their clothing is more along the lines of Anthropologie and Free People, and you can borrow 6 outfits for a month!

Hands and nails often show, especially during infant and couple shoots, so manicures or simply painting your nails is helpful. Also, I encourage you to bring meaningful objects to incorporate, like a quilt your relative made, or a wooden toy or book that your child loves. Just avoid plastic toys if possible. For couples, I love big wraps or blankets to put around the two of you.

For colors, opposing colors work well seasonally. For instance, if we are shooting in the fall with lots of yellow and orange leaves on the trees, blue is going to really pop. In the summer, when the grass is green, pink is going to look amazing. If we are going to be in a darker forest or shooting at sunset, white will stand out really well.

And of course, here are some don’ts:

I do not recommend neon colors, as florescent colors are not picked up well by the camera.

Do not wear clothing with prominent logos, they are very distracting.
